A chance find in a charity shop has led to a picture by a 19th century Hungarian painter being sold to a collector in his homeland.
Jan D'Arcy went shopping at the Barnardo's store in New Street, Ashford, looking for a picture frame she could remove the glass from to repair another framed work.
When she got it home and dismantled the purchase she noticed the picture of composer Franz Liszt in the frame bore a signature belonging to Hungarian artist Mihály Munkácsy who died in May 1900.
Ms D'Arcy said: "It was very exciting to discover the origins of the picture. I am thrilled to say that I found a buyer on eBay from Hungary who purchased it for £110 and the picture has made its way back home.
"I have also given the £110 back to Barnardo's."
Sophie Denne, Barnardo’s store manager said: "We are delighted that Ms D'Arcy was able to purchase what she needed from the store and in doing so made such a terrific find.
"Our stores are a real treasure trove of goods and you never know what you might come across.
"We are extremely grateful to Ms D'Arcy for donating the money from the picture back to Barnardo's.
"Donations go towards supporting vulnerable children and families in Ashford and across the UK."
