85 jobs if Dunelm Mill store given the go-ahead

A big brand name in home furnishings is hoping to set up shop on a retail park on the outskirts of Ashford.
Dunelm Mill has applied for planning permission to convert the former Comet unit at Sevington into one of their stores.
If approved, the plans would see the creation of a homestore and customer cafe, and would lead to 85 jobs.
Ashford Borough Council (ABC) member Cllr Paul Bartlett, whose Weald East ward borders the development, said he is in favour of the plans.
He added: “It’s a very exciting scheme by a well-liked and responsible firm.
“Many jobs were lost when Homebase, Comet and Allied Carpets closed, and this could bring a good number of jobs back to Sevington.
“Based on what they’ve done in Canterbury it’s also great news for shoppers, and we should definitely welcome them.

“I think in the current climate, it’s been a hard slog to get the unit let, so it’s very much something we should support.
“I think the proposed customer cafe on the upper floor is a welcome addition, and should make the unit much more attractive.”
The application was received by ABC on August 16, and a decision is expected by November 19.
A spokesman for the Dunelm Mill added: “Dunelm is always looking for potential new sites to bring its value offering of homewares to new customers and has been progressing the opening of a new superstore in Ashford.
“The planning application is currently under way and we look forward to advancing the store’s opening, as well as bringing new jobs to the area.”
