A man was reportedly hit with a pole after a row broke out in the street, leaving him needing hospital treatment.
A dark-coloured Volvo estate car and white Fiat are said to have stopped in The Street, Hamstreet, by the junction with the A2070, at around 4.15pm yesterday.
An argument broke out and the driver of the Fiat, a man in his 50s, was apparently hit with a metal pole or crow bar.
Shortly after members of the public intervened and two men, who were said to be in the Volvo, drove away.
A 42-year-old man from Wateringbury was arrested last night by officers on suspicion of assault and remains in custody.
Police are now appealing for more information about the incident.
PC Gemma Simpson said: "Thank you to everyone who has spoken to police about the assault already.
"We understand that potentially more cars stopped at the scene to offer help at the time, and we would ask those people to call us on 01843 222289 quoting ZY/15928/18."
