Ashford town centre at a standstill due to poorly parked van in Bank Street

An illegally parked van caused traffic chaos in Ashford town centre today.

Police were called to the junction of Tufton Street and Bank Street to a report a van parked on the side of the share space scheme was preventing buses from passing.

Witness Andy Clark said: "A bus couldn't get around the van. So a queue quickly formed behind it which strectched back to Elwick Road and to the traffic lights near the station.

"A traffic warden turned up and a supervisor for the bus company called the police.

"A PCSO arrived and noticed a window was open. However the driver then turned up."

The driver was issued with a traffic notice.

Stagecoach tweeted: "Due to an incident in the town centre, some local services are experiencing delays."

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "We were called at 2.51pm to an obstruction in Bank Street, Ashford.

"It was reported that a vehicle was parked half on the road and half on the pavement.

"The caller said he couldn’t pass and the road was blocked as a result.

"Patrols attended, officers spoke to the driver and the vehicle was moved.

"Apparently a parking ticket has also been issued. This was resolved by 3.07pm."
