A cosmetics factory in Kent is due to close this week due to 'falling demand' for products amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Coty, based on the Eureka Leisure Park, in Ashford, will start its four week temporarily closure from Friday.

This is to protect staff during the Covid-19 outbreak, but also to balance the reduction in calls for products.

Only a small 'crisis team' will remain on site.

A spokeswoman for Coty said: "In order to balance the protection of our employees and address the reduction in activity owing to falling demand, we are preparing for a temporary four week shutdown of the Ashford factory beginning this Friday, March 27.

"A small crisis team will be put in place to be able to work if demand requires it.

"We are monitoring the situation closely as government guidelines evolve, and will be communicating any measures to our employees as they are announced."

Coty manufactures products including Rimmel London make-up and cosmetics at the site.

It is not known how many employees are based at the factory, but it is understood to be several hundred.

It is also not know if staff will be paid during the temporary closure.

Other businesses in Kent to shut because of the virus crisis include restaurants, theatres and shops.

Big brands including McDonalds, John Lewis and Primark have all announced closures.
