Pupils at Homewood School may get to go home early one day a week.

The principal of Kent’s biggest secondary is consulting parents and bus companies over cutting the length of the school day on Wednesdays.

Sally Lees’ plan would see more than 2,500 pupils leave the premises at 2.15pm rather than 3.30pm, which is the end time every other day.

In a letter to parents, Mrs Lees said she wanted to consult them over the change, which could take effect in August.

“All other days will start and finish at the same time as currently, but under these proposals, students would finish at 2.15pm on Wednesdays,” she said.

“There would be no loss in teaching time as we intend to remove the 10-minute registration period at the end of each day and incorporate that into teaching time on the other four days of the week.”

Mrs Lees said that the new arrangement would be to allow for regular staff training every Wednesday afternoon.

“Investing in high quality training time is an important priority for us,” she said. “We see this as a practical way of providing this time.”

Mrs Lees said that she would also be consulting the bus companies which provided school transport.

If parents had problems with the early finish, study facilities would be provided in the library for pupils needing to remain in school until 3.30pm. The school day would still start at 8.30am, as with every other day, and finish at 3.30pm on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

A decision is expected before the start of the new school year in August.

Homewood has been an academy since 2011.
