The 12-screen Cineworld at Ashford may be temporarily shut, but work on its long-awaited IMAX extension is continuing to progress.

A tall structure is beginning to take shape on the Eureka Leisure Park site, with the upgrade already dwarfing the existing cinema.

Once complete, the extension will boast two new screens - one IMAX and a new 4DX feature which is described as a multisensory experience where movie-goers sit in high-tech motion seats.

The rollercoaster-like technology will move in synchronisation with the film, adding wind, rain, scent and other effects in line with the action on screen.

Groundworks started in March this year and now contractors are beginning to erect the building's frame.

The work is continuing despite Cineworld c losing down its cinemas last month after the new James Bond movie's release date was again pushed back.

Once major releases are due back on screen, the firm will bring its sites back into use - but for the time being doors remain locked.

Permission for the Ashford expansion was originally secured four years ago, when the borough council approved proposals for three new screens.

The scheme, which was subsequently lowered to two screens, also includes a pair of new restaurants either side of the neighbouring Pizza Hut - one in the cinema extension and another separate unit.

The development is being split into two phases, with the cinema expansion earmarked for completion next year.
