A KENT baker has been fined a total £6,300 and had his shop closed down by magistrates because of its appalling condition.

Adrian Potter, who owns the Old Traditional Bakery in Hythe Road, Ashford, also faces the prospect of paying more than £3,300 in costs.

He appeared before Ashford magistrates for sentence after admitting 21 separate charges connected with the bakery.

At an earlier hearing he pleaded guilty to 15 counts of risking food contamination, two charges of having food unfit for human consumption, three charges of failing to comply with food improvement notices and a charge of failing to ensure food safety measures were maintained correctly.

On top of the financial penalties the magistrates made a prohibition order to stop the manufacture and storage of food stuffs at the shop.
