Curtain up on family's live theatre plan

00:00, 15 November 2001

AN ENTERPRISING family is working on an ambitious plan to build a live theatre and arts centre in Ashford. Programme director Raymond Russell and his three children have launched Action For Theatre (and are hoping their project will be well underway within two years.

Mr Russell, who previously worked in financial services, said: "There has been talk about getting a theatre in Ashford for over 20 years but nothing is ever done and perhaps it just needs someone to get it off the ground. I have incorporated my artistic skills and my corporate experience to start the ball rolling."

As an artist herself, Mr Russell's daughter Esther Russell, 25, has taken on the role of arts director while her brother Sam Russell, 21, who works in banking, is financial manager. Their younger sister Alice, 14, is taking care of junior interest.

Action For Theatre have not found a suitable location but expect to use somewhere on the outskirts because of property prices in the town centre. The arts centre would be non-profit making organisation providing space for live performances, exhibitions and for local crafts to be sold.

The family team are currently working on publicity and fundraising. They hope to get some funding from local residents on a share basis. Supporters will be able to buy a share in the centre, which can be cashed in at anytime, for as little as £5.

Action For Theatre have won the support of theatre producer Michael Fields, of St Mary's in the Marsh, who is "burning to bring out local talent".

A spokesperson for Ashford cuncil said: "We recognise the public demand for an arts centre, live music and performing arts centre that reflects Ashford's growing regional status and importance. The council would be more than interested to hear other people's views on the subject."

Mr Russell would welcome letters of support for the arts centre to 12 Waterman House, Godfrey Walk, Ashford, TN23 7XF.
