A Waitrose customer has spoken of his disgust after spotting dead flies and dust above a fresh bakery.

The shopper saw the dirt on a window ledge as he walked past the Ashford store off Templer Way.

He complained to staff in the store and also contacted the supermarket's head office.

The shopper - who did not give his name - photographed the mess at the end of last month.

He said: "I spotted the dirt as I walked past the window of the store and I couldn't believe it.

"There was a thick layer of dust and dead flies - it had been there for quite some time.

"I took a photo and then went back two days later and it was still the same.

"The window ledge is above open food, the bakery is just below it, which is concerning. You only need a gust of wind to blow it on to the open goods."

The shopper is calling for the window ledge to be cleaned regularly.

He added: "People are unaware of it because it isn't at eye level, but you can see it from the window as you are walking past.

"The window ledge should be included in the cleaning routine.

"Waitrose is an expensive store and this isn't what you would expect - it is disgusting. If it's dirty then it makes you wonder where else is dirty."

A Waitrose spokesman apologised for the mess, saying: "We are really sorry this didn't meet our normal high standards - we cleaned the area as soon as this was brought to our attention."
