A driver had to be treated by firefighters for shock after their car plunged down a motorway embankment this morning.

Fire crews from Ashford were called to the scene near to junction 9 of the M20 shortly before 8.30am.

Initial reports suggested the vehicle had caught fire but crews found no signs of a blaze when they arrived.

They found the car and a trailer had slid down an embankment and come to rest near the motorway on the Londonbound carriageway.

Two crews attended along with the police and Highways England officers.

The driver had to be treated with oxygen to counter the shock.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 8.22am to a report that a car towing a trailer had left the carriageway and fallen down a bank, on the M20 London-bound near Junction 9.

"The driver was not seriously injured and I’m not aware of any other occupants. Officers have now left the scene and the carriageway is clear."
