Fire crews descended on a charity shop after an electric heater caught alight.
The YMCA in Brookfield Court, South Ashford, was engulfed with smoke when the appliance burned at about 10am, forcing the evacuation of staff members.
Two fire engines attended, and a water jet was used to quell the fire by 10.45am.
A high-pressure fan cleared the commercial unit of smoke before staff were let back in.
No injuries were caused by the incident.
A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Firefighters are advising people who own electric heaters to ensure they are serviced regularly and are kept a safe distance from furniture, clothing or curtains to reduce the risk of fire.
