Police are warning villagers to remain vigilant after reports of a cold call from a fake gas worker.

It comes after a man knocked on a High Street home in Charing yesterday claiming to be from a nearby gas company.

Although the man did not try to gain access to the house, Inspector Jason Atkinson says it is a timely reminder to residents not to let cold callers in without being certain of their credentials.

He said: "He told the occupant he had received a report that someone had smelt gas in the area. He had some information about the occupant, but supplied an incorrect telephone number.

"We would always advise people not to let people they don’t know into their home unless they are one hundred per cent sure they are legitimate.

"Always check their identity. Phone the company they are representing and confirm they are legitimate. Genuine callers won’t mind. And if you are in any doubt ask them to come back at a time when you have a chance to have someone with you."

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to phone Kent Police on 01843 222289 quoting reference number 13-1205.
