The family of a teenage girl killed in a car crash last night are pleading for anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

The 17-year-old, named on social media as Millie Greenway, was a passenger in a car which was driving towards Egerton, near Ashford, when it left the road and hit a tree in a garden.

There were six people travelling in the silver Suzuki Swift, which was on Mundy Bois Road, close to the junction with Kingsland Lane, when it crashed at around 8.20pm.

Pictures show damage left to a fence and the tree, with floral tributes also being left at the scene today.

Both police and ambulance crews attended the crash, and Millie, who was from the Ashford area, died on the way to hospital.

Three others, a 19-year-old man, an 18-year-old man and another 17-year-old girl, were all taken to a London hospital where they remain in a serious but stable condition.

Officers arrested a 19-year-old man from Ashford and a 17-year-old girl from Maidstone, both of whom had previously been discharged from hospital, on suspicion of driving offences.

Both remain in custody while inquiries into the incident continue.

An appeal has been launched by police, who would like to hear from anyone who saw the Suzuki Swift prior to the collision and may be able to help trace its movements and describe the manner it was being driven in.

Family members have also reached out on Facebook asking for information.

Kevin Poynter said: "If anyone in the area saw anything, my cousin was the girl who unfortunately lost her life. RIP Millie Greenway."

Andy Greenway commented: "Thank you everyone. Millie was amazing. Please help if you can."

Tani Boxall said: "You were such a loving, funny and talkative person that I honestly adored so much. You are going to be the brightest star up there Millie. I will never forget the times you helped me through like my first day at a new school.

"You were the beautiful Millie. I can’t even take this news in completely but I just wanted to share a few of our memories."

A note left on flowers at the crash site reads: "Dear darling Millie, forever in our thoughts and prayers. Never to be forgotten."

Millie went to Canterbury College after attending the North School in Ashford.

She was a former sales assistant at JD Sports and before becoming an apprentice paint sprayer at Summer Motors Ltd in Biddenden.

Kent Police has made a mandatory referral to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to a police vehicle being in close proximity at the time of the collision.

An IOPC spokesman said: “We have begun an independent investigation into the actions of the police prior to a road traffic incident in Kent in which, sadly, a young woman has died.

“We were notified by Kent Police that at around 8.20pm on Saturday 4 July in Mundy Bois Road, Egerton near Pluckley, police on patrol in a marked vehicle saw a vehicle containing six people that then headed off at speed.

"The police vehicle turned around to follow the vehicle and found it had crashed. Officers called the ambulance service and gave medical assistance at the scene.

“One of the vehicle’s occupants, a passenger, has died, and the driver and some of the other passengers are in hospital with serious injuries.

“Our investigators attended the scene of the collision and attended the post-incident procedures. Part of our investigation will be to establish whether or not the police were actively pursuing the vehicle.

“Our thoughts are with the family of the young woman who has died and all of those affected.”
