A supermarket has erected a memorial to a cat, which was famous due to its frequent visits to the shop.

Tail-less black cat Sammy died at the Ashford branch of Asda in August after being mauled by a dog.

The 15-year-old moggy was affectionately known as Sammy the Asda Cat, named after her favourite haunt on Kimberley Way.

Over the course of her long life, she gained many fans and even went missing for a month - eventually turning up 30 miles away in Gillingham.

Her Facebook page attracted 156 likes, and her owner Joanne Henderson posted an update on there this morning.

It reads: "I would like to say a massive thank you to Jodie Empett who works behind the cigarette kiosk at Asda’s who has had a lovely plaque made for Sammy.

"Sammy is now back at her second home behind the cigarette kiosk with one of her special friends, it will be so lovely for all her followers to be able to see her beautiful face again, thanks again Jodie we appreciate what you have done."

The memorial is now visible by the front door, and features pictures of the cat alongside its name and age.

Following her death, a Gofundme campaign was set up to recuperate some of the vet bills incurred during attempts to save her life.

So far, it has raised more than £700.

Previously, a different feline called Daisy was nicknamed 'the Asda Cat' for her frequent trips to the same shop.
