Firefighters have issued a warning about cooking safety after tackling a kitchen blaze last night.

Crews were called to The Rise, in Stanope, Ashford, around 4.25pm.

Two fire engines were sent to tackle the flames on the first floor of the semi-detached property.

They used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze and a special fan to clear smoke and fumes from the property.

A spokesman for the service said: "The best way to prevent cooking fires is to keep a close eye on your cooking.

"If you're heating oil for pan-frying or deep-fat frying, stay in the kitchen and never leave the pans unattended.

"If you see wisps of smoke or smell something acrid, turn the heat down immediately or take the pan off the heat.

"The oil won't immediately catch fire once it starts smoking, but smoke is a danger sign that it's well on its way to getting there."
