An agricultural consultant died from stab wounds in Africa, an inquest heard this week.
Adrian Buchanan-Browne, 59, of Churchfield Road, Wye, died in a hotel room in Nima, a suburb of Accra, the capital of Ghana, on September 29.
It is understood that Mr Buchanan-Browne was a former Wye Agricultural College student.
A post-mortem examination carried out in Ashford this week revealed that he died primarily from multiple stab wounds.
The examination at the William Harvey Hospital also found that he had suffered a fractured tibia (shinbone).
The inquest was opened on Wednesday at Folkestone Magistrates Court.
Coroner's officer Adam Trewerne said that Mr Buchanan-Browne, who was born in Belfast, was identified by a passport photograph.
He was married to a woman called Binta Ishaku and has two children.
Rachel Redman, coroner for Central and South East Kent, adjourned the inquest for a date to be fixed.
A report on Mr Buchanan-Browne's death in an Accra newspaper said he was found dead in his hotel room by a housekeeper who had gone to the room to clean it and discovered his body in the bathroom.
The newspaper said the Nima police, who are handling the case, have refused to talk to the media about the incident.
