A Kent landmark which can be seen for miles was lit up last night to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

Wye Crown - carved onto the North Downs overlooking Ashford and beyond - was illuminated in impressive fashion.

Thought to have been prepared by the site's landowners, the crown's glow lit up the dark hills and could be seen by hundreds living below.

The huge crown emblem was cut into the chalk hillside more than 100 years ago by students of Wye College to commemorate the coronation of King Edward VII.

During the last century, the landmark has been a focal point for the celebration during royal occasions.

It sits in a site of special scientific interest and walkers enjoy reaching the crown in order to gain vast views across to the Romney Marsh.

Celebrations were held across Kent yesterday as the nation marked 75 years since guns fell silent across Europe.
