After only 10 days in a bed and breakfast, a group of rough sleepers have found themselves back on the streets.

Eight homeless people had previously been camping under the ramp of the Edinburgh Road car park in the town centre.

But between Porchlight and Ashford Borough Council (ABC) they were given temporary accommodation and hope for a long-term plan.

ABC’s Town Centre Action Team (T-CAT) quickly cleaned up the area under the ramp and erected large metal fences to block access.

But just 10 days later, three of them are back in tents under the bridge.

Jason Butler, 30, said he is disappointed but not surprised.

He said: "We were promised two to four weeks in the B&B and deposits for flats and serious long-term help. But they haven’t stuck to their word at all and we are just back out on the streets again. They only wanted us out of the way so they could block this area off, that’s all it was.

"But three of us are back in tents under the same car park again. We have been gaining entry through an opening at the back, so we can’t be done for breaking and entering or anything.

"We really don’t have a choice. Where else are we supposed to go? We were all really hopeful we would receive some long-term help but we are literally back to square one. It’s really upsetting."

Jason said more of the group are expected to be joining them back under the ramp in the next few days as their temporary accommodation comes to an end.

But Ashford Borough Council insists it has done everything it possibly can to help the group and is still working with Porchlight for a long-term solution.

An ABC spokesman said: "The council and Porchlight are continuing to help those members of the group who are engaging with us and working collaboratively to find more permanent solutions to their housing need."
