Arthur, the face of the Rare Breeds Centre in Woodchurch, has been rescued after collapsing.
The gentle cob cross horse, a familiar and welcoming face at the visitor attraction for many years, was taken ill last week.
Niki Sara of the centre explained: “Arthur was turned out in his paddock as usual on Friday morning when a member of staff noticed that he was in a ditch and couldn’t get up on his own.
“After about one and half hours and several staff of trying to coax him up, it was decided to call the vet.
“Although the vet did what he could, poor Arthur was still unable to get to his feet.
“In a desperate bid to save him before he became even more distressed, the fire service was called and duly arrived with a crane and cradle all the way from Faversham.”
She added: “The team quickly and efficiently set about getting Arthur into a harness and began the delicate task of lifting him on to his feet.
“The difficult bit over, it was now up to Arthur to get his legs to carry his weight again.
“The fire crew again responded with such kindness and professionalism. Eventually the harness was taken off and after a drink of water and a slow walk around he was inspected by the vet and allowed to roam freely in the field.”
Laila Jane Hameed, who looks after Arthur, said: “If it hadn’t been for the patience and expertise of the fire crew I fear the outcome would have been different.”
Mrs Sara said: “After about an hour Arthur was oblivious to the commotion he had caused.
“He is now grazing happily with his companions in his field.”
