Hundreds of people flocked to Charing on Saturday for the launch of the village’s Great War exhibition, which has been spread across 14 venues.

The exhibition, marking the centenary of the start of the First World War, was officially opened in the parish hall by Cllr Gerry Clarkson, leader of Ashford Borough Council and ward member for Charing. This was followed by a short talk by Dr John Ray on Remembering the Great War.

Hundreds of visitors then examined the various displays and performances.

At the primary school, pupils showcased their work, including a War Horse model, and performed a poetry montage in honour of the fallen, including ones they had written themselves.

Volunteer Jill Leyland said: “People had tears in their eyes listening to the children.”
