Has spring already sprung?

As temperatures fell this week and Kent was battered by storm force winds and torrential rain, that idea may seem a little premature.

But for one South Ashford resident, spring is definitely in the air with daffodils in her front garden already in bloom.

Beryl Clarke, of Riversdale Road, who is in her 70s, was surprised to see the flowers out in her garden so early.

She said: “I’ve not seen them anywhere else, they started coming through a good week ago.

“It might be because it’s a bit sheltered down by the porch, or perhaps it’s just a bit warmer this year.”

Daffodils are normally expected to flower between February and early May. Traditionally they are considered one of the heralds of spring.

Planted in autumn, they spend several months developing roots before the flowers burst forth in spring.
