Pluckley is renowned for being the most haunted village in the UK, however a folklore researcher from Kent doesn’t believe all of the stories are true.

Neil Arnold is giving a talk tonight about ghost stories from around the county and which ones are fact and which are fiction.

He has released several books about paranormal activity within different towns and villages around Kent.

Mr Arnold said: “There’s said to be between 12 or 14 ghosts in Pluckley with rumours of phantom coach and horse, ghosts in the Black Horse Pub, a phantom monk, a Tudor lady, a ghostly highwayman, a red lady and there’s a white lady.

“I’ve been interested in Pluckley since the age of nine, when I used to read about it and wonder if the stories were true, I began to realise that maybe a lot weren’t all they were all cracked up to be.

He continued: “I’ve found that a lot of the stories don’t seem to go back much before the 1940’s and there is legend that somebody who lived in the village did actually make up the stories around the 1950’s possibly for an article.

“Smugglers also used to make up stories to stop people from trespassing where they kept their contraband.”

Mr Arnold has spent years researching the area, reading reports and interviewing people, and doesn’t believe that there is a lot of truth behind the Pluckley stories which has made the village a hotspot for ghost hunters.

“Not everybody is making it up, but myself, I have never seen anything and I would say it does seem that a lot of the stories are fabricated - they don’t make sense.

“We’re not going to be able to prove anything with ghosts, evidence is always going to be scant but people take these stories as fact and I like to find out if some of these stories are fiction.

“We’re looking at ghost stories that are classic archetypes like headless horsemen or phantom monks, Pluckey’s got that air of mystery about it, it’s a very old village so it should have ghost stories.

"People go down there and keep the legend alive by fuelling those rumours.”

Mr Arnold will be at Pluckley Village Hall tonight at 7pm, where he will be revealing in more detail about his research and which stories are true.
