Leon Camier believes second World Superbikes race should not have gone ahead
12:46, 05 September 2011
Leon Camier has strongly questioned the decision to allow race two at rain-drenched World Superbike round 10 to go ahead after being one of a number to crash out in Germany.
The 25-year-old (pictured) had been preparing all weekend at the Nurburgring in dry conditions but qualified in a less than impressive 13th position before and finishing race one eighth.
However the heavens opened on Camier and the rest of the paddock moments before the start of race two resulting in a 15-minute delay after which officials eventually gave the green light.
It didn’t appear to have an effect on Camier as he battled his way to fifth at one stage but conditions got worse by the lap and his race was ended after a fall on lap 12.
The red flag ending the race was waved just two laps later and Camier, who was one of six riders to succumb to the conditions, was adamant it shouldn’t have gone ahead at all.
“There was a virtually river running across the asphalt – it was truly dangerous to run race two,” said Camier – who is sixth overall with 154 points.
“There were puddles everywhere, visibility was terribly reduced and the situation got worse lap after lap. Other riders also had trouble in the turn where I slid.
“It is a real shame and I think they could have stopped the race earlier given the track conditions – but there’s no use complaining about it now.”
Camier’s fellow Brit Tom Sykes reveled in the wet conditions taking victory in race two after runaway championship leader Carlos Checa took the honours in the dry race one.
