A vehicle fire has led to long delays on the M20 on a stretch where Operation Brock is in place.

One lane was out of action on the motorway London-bound between Junction 9 for Ashford and Junction 8 for Leeds Castle at Maidstone earlier.

A spokesperson for the fire service said they were called to the incident at 1.42pm.

“One fire engine attended and crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire,” they added.

“There were no reported injuries and the cause is not yet known.”

Crews left the scene just before 2.30pm and a recovery vehicle was sent.

At 5.50pm National Highways issued an update, saying: “Thanks for your patience, lane closure removed on the M20 westbound between J9 Ashford and J8 following the lorry fire. “

Motorists are being advised to allow for delays to ease with approximately four miles of congestion still.

A speed restriction remains in place due to Operation Brock where all freight traffic heading for a channel crossing must go through the coned area on the M20 coastbound from J8 (Leeds Castle / Maidstone Services) to J9 (Ashford).
