Mum fears for family safety after cars crash into garden

00:01, 03 September 2017

A mum fears for her family’s safety at an accident blackspot after finding two crashed cars in her garden on the same day.

Sally Thomson Cunningham has reported that four cars have ploughed through the hedge in her garden in the past month, just yards from where her children play.

She set up a petition calling for council highways chiefs to cut the speed limit from 60mph to 40mph at the bend in Ashford Road near Bromley Green, between Shadoxhurst and Hamstreet.

It follows reports of dozens of other cars crashing into the hedge near her home since she moved there a year ago, and her neighbours have also reported similar problems.

In a letter to Cllr Mike Angell, who represents the Ashford Rural South Ward at Kent County Council, she has urged action to make the area safe.

Mrs Thomson Cunningham wrote: “One of the cars flipped over on the bend and the driver was extremely lucky that there was no oncoming traffic, otherwise there could have been a serious or fatal accident.

“These incidents involved cars losing control at the bend, spinning around in the road, and many overturned. All have ended up going through my hedge or my neighbour's hedge.

“It’s just a matter of time before a speeding car comes around the blind corner and has a head-on collision here.

“I am too scared to go out on to this road to take pictures for fear that someone will hit me in the process.

“The debris frm these accidents, such as broken glass, metal and wood, has been thrown more than 20 metres into our garden. I am very worried about my family’s safety as these accidents are a frequent occurrence. What if my small children were playing there?”

Previously, Kent County Council says it has to make “tough decisions” about where to improve road safety, with the sites most in need being prioritised.
