An angry mum is urging council bosses to fix a "crumbling" path after her son fell into a ditch and was left sobbing in pain.

Rachel Newton and Freddie, six, were walking along Ulley Road in Kennington, Ashford, when he suddenly slipped off the pavement and down into the bushes.

The youngster suffered nasty cuts and scratches to his arms and legs - and Mrs Newton says he was lucky not to have broken any bones.

Freddie had been walking on the inside of the path when his right foot slid into a hole, taking his whole body into the bushes and down a steep bank.

Mrs Newton is now urging Kent County Council to repair the pavement, which is just around the corner from Downs View Infant School .

"It needs to be fixed," the 41-year-old hairdresser said.

"Lots of people have contacted the council about it, so I don't know whether [the council] don't think it's worth doing.

"How many kids have got to fall down it before something gets done?"

Recalling the incident on Friday, the mother-of-two says Freddie had been "chatting away" happily as they walked their dog Woody.

"The next thing he shouted and I looked to see he had fallen down where the pavement is crumbling away next to the bushes," she said.

"I had to grab him out and he had scratches all down his leg and a cut on his knee and elbow."

Freddie was crying in pain for the rest of the walk home to Tritton Fields.

Mrs Newton posted about the incident on Facebook and says she is not surprised to hear of several others falling off the pavement.

"As you walk further up you notice how bad it all is," she added.

"I've also heard of people with mobility scooters going down into the gap.

"It's such a busy road - you're constantly passing people so you have to move over."

Ulley Road was previously criticised by TV star Jeremy Clarkson for having "stupid" speed bumps.

It was resurfaced earlier this year - but no improvements were made to the path.

A Kent County Council (KCC) spokesperson said: “Our roads and footways are maintained in line with our highways and asset management plan (HAMP).

“While there are no current works planned for the footway in Ulley Road, we will continue to monitor this area with regular inspections as set out in the HAMP."

The spokesperson encouraged residents who have concerns about roads and paths to report them via the KCC website.
