The cause of TV presenter Paul O'Grady's sudden death has been confirmed.

A statement shared by the 67-year-old's family at the time said he died "unexpectedly but peacefully" at his home in Aldington near Ashford.

On his official death certificate, it confirms the star's death was from sudden cardiac arrhythmia which the British Heart Foundation describes as a cardiac arrest with no known cause.

O'Grady openly spoke about his struggles with heart disease having suffered three heart attacks before the age of 65.

The death certificate showed long-time friend and former PA and agent, Joan Marshrons, registered the entertainer's death six days after he died at home, the Daily Express reported.

Fans were left shocked by the announcement of the presenter who was also known for his drag alter ego Lily Savage, who had only just signed a new contract with Boom Radio station having left BBC Radio 2.

Paul's husband, Andre Portasio, revealed the news of his death in a statement on March 29 while villagers in Aldington paid tribute to their celebrity neighbour.

Mr Portasio said: "It is with great sadness that I inform you that Paul has passed away unexpectedly but peacefully yesterday evening.

"We ask, at this difficult time, that whilst you celebrate his life you also respect our privacy as we come to terms with this loss.

"He will be greatly missed by his loved ones, friends, family, animals and all those who enjoyed his humour, wit and compassion.

"I know that he would want me to thank you for all the love you have shown him over the years."

Paul was back on TV this week as the animal lover's final ever series of For the Love of Dogs, filmed before his death, was aired.

The episode was made even more poignant by his sudden passing as the presenter said goodbye to a rescue dog he had helped nurse back to full health.

He said to the pooch named Peggy: "It's been a real privilege to get to know you. It has. It's not every day you get to meet a special dog like you. You're very beautiful.

"But I've got to go now. It's been lovely knowing you. Good luck. See ya."

He then turned to the cameras and said: "Why me!? It's too hard to say goodbye."
