Officers stood guard in Beecholme Drive, Kennington, following the incident at 10.10pm last night.
Paramedics treated the man at the scene for injuries to his legs and a hand.
He was then taken to the William Harvey Hospital where he remains in a stable condition.
A police car and unmarked vehicle were at the scene this afternoon close to the junction with Rectory Way.
A neighbour said they heard "screaming and shouting" before the emergency vehicles arrived last night.
