Members of Ashford's Green Party campaigned for cheaper fare prices at the Ashford International Station today
12:23, 13 August 2013
Campaigners gathered at the Ashford International Station this morning to fight against the rise in fare prices.
The early morning event was part of a nationwide Day of Action in conjunction with the Action for Rail campaign- which is making a stand against the punishing fare rises and pressing for public ownership of Britain’s railways.
The Day of Action was held today to mark the announcement of the inflation figure, which is used to calculate increases to regulated rail fares, like season tickets, from next year. From January 2014, fares could rise by 4-9%.
Members of the Ashford Green Party were amongst the protesters and supported Action For Rail by handing out leaflets to commuters this morning.
Included in the forms was a freepost card, inviting members of the public to write to their MP asking for a publicly owned rail service that puts people before profits.
Mandy Rossi, from the Ashford Green Party, said: “We’re calling on the government to put an end to costly and wasteful rail privatisation.
“We had very positive feedback this morning from the public. People are keen to see the railway back in public ownership.
"Any profits would then be spent on improving the railway service and reducing fares, rather than benefitting shareholders.”
