Witnesses are today being sought after three people were seriously injured in a crash on Romney Marsh.

A man and a woman had to be cut free by firefighters after being trapped in their cars and were flown to hospital after the three-car smash on the A259 Dymchurch Road, near the Warren Inn pub.

Another passenger was taken to hospital by land ambulance after the pile-up, at about 4.05pm on Friday.

Police particularly want to hear from people who saw one car, a dark blue Renault Clio, in the moments leading up to the collision.

This was driven by a 21-year-old man who was taken to the Royal London Hospital with leg, arm and back injuries. He is currently in a stable condition.

Another car, a black Ford Focus, was driven by a 75-year-old woman from Lydd. She was taken to King's College Hospital in London with serious chest and pelvis injuries.

Police said she is in a stable condition following surgery.

These two were flown by the Kent Air Ambulance after two helicopters were called out.

The third victim was a 20-year-old man, from Littlestone, who was a passenger in the Renault.

He was taken by land ambulance to the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford with leg and arm injuries. He is now in a stable condition.

The driver of the third vehicle involved received minor injuries.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said it sent three ambulances and three response cars to the scene.

Firefighters were also seen to have cut open the roofs of two cars.

A Kent Fire and Rescue service spokesman said: "Fire crews assisted medical teams with the removal of two casualties who were trapped.

"Crews used hydraulic cutting equipment to release a man and woman from two separate vehicles."

Police closed the road for more than four hours until around 8.40pm.

PC Justin Farrow said: "This was a busy Friday afternoon during the rush hour and there were many vehicles and people in the area.

"We particularly want to speak to witnesses who saw the dark blue Renault Clio in the moments leading up to the collision in the New Romney area.

"Three people remain in hospital recovering from their injuries, however this could have had a much more serious outcome."
