Police are dealing with a deep 'sinkhole' which opened up in a town centre road today.
Officers are at the scene of the hole in Albert Road, Ashford, which opened up around lunchtime.
The road has collapsed into the small hole at the surface, but below the road there is now a void stretching two or three feet down and four or five feet across.
Police Community Support Officers have taped off the road in both directions, meanwhile Kent County Council Highways were called to investigate.
A KCC Highways spokesman said: "Investigative work is currently being undertaken, the cause of the sinkhole is unknown at this stage.
"Once we have excavated the area repairs will be arranged."
The spokesman added that if it is a fault linked to utilities such as water or gas supplies then the appropriate utility company will be contacted.
