Emergency services were called to a town centre pharmacy after a burglar alarm was triggered during snow showers.

Two fire engines went to Boots in Ashford High Street shortly after 9pm on Thursday, January 12 after the alarm went off.

It is believed that the dips in power caused by the snow may have triggered the alarm to go off and smoke to fill the store.

The alarm previously went off in November 2015 due to a fault, and is believed to be a measure to make it difficult for burglars to escape.

Trevor Cook, who runs the nearby Chilli Bite cafe, also had to check his alarm which he believes was activated by the high winds causing curtains in the premises to move.

He said fire crews checked the whole building, and that other alarms were going off in the town centre at the same time.

A Boots spokesman confirmed that a power surge is tripped the smoke cloak detector system, and that there was no fire at the store.
