A thug who barged into a man as he was getting into a lift at a Kent railway station before kicking him in the shin has been placed under curfew.

Ryan Giles, from Hythe, was getting into a lift at Ashford International when he began shouting in a loud voice before he shoulder-barged Lewis Slater who was getting out.

As that happened, Mr Slater said to Giles he should let people out of the lift before getting in it. But this upset Giles further and he shouted directly in Mr Lewis' face and kicked him in the shin before raising his fist at him.

At this point someone else at the station intervened, but later Giles was arrested and charged with assault by beating.

The 29-year-old admitted the offence when he appeared at Folkestone Magistrates' Court on February 15.

Chelsea Clarke prosecuting told the court the incident happened on October 1, 2021.

She explained: "Giles was getting in the lift and he was shouting in a loud voice. It wasn't clear what his anger was directed at and he shoulder-barged a man coming out.

"He was told by the other man to let people out of the lift before entering but then Giles started shouting directly at him and kicked him in the shin and raised his fist at him.

"The victim suffered scratches and a bruise."

The court also heard Giles claimed Mr Slater was the one who barged his way out of the lift and he only reacted that way because of that.

District Judge Justin Barron placed Giles under curfew for four weeks which means he will have to stay in each day from 8pm to 6am.

He said: "It was an isolated incident and there was no serious injuries."

Giles, of Stade Street, was also ordered to pay Mr Slater £100 in compensation, a victim surcharge of £95 and £85 costs.
