M20 at Ashford at a standstill due to heavy flooding
18:30, 08 August 2017
There was chaos on a busy motorway after heavy rain flooded the carriageway.
Kent Highways reported delays around Ashford as the London-bound M20 between junction 10 and 9 was under water, closing two lanes.
The thunderstorm and deluge had been predicted earlier in the day and arrived with avengeance around 5pm.
Storm chasers also posted a video of a tornado on the Isle of Sheppey on the Swale Weather Twitter page.
The rain hit Ashford particularly hard causing treacherous driving conditions.
It continues the washout summer with more rain being forecast throughout the rest of the week, bringing further misery to holidaymakers and drivers.
Highways England said the motorway reopened at 6.45pm, but traffic did not clear until much later.
