A bizarre wardrobe belonging to an Ashfordian has helped to raise more than £600 for a charity helping injured servicemen and women.
Joyce Richards sold off her late husband Reg’s collection of unusual shirts and T-shirts on Saturday at a fundraiser at her Beaver Lane home in aid of Help for Heroes.
Around 40 family members and friends – some of whom had travelled from Wales – crowded into the sunny back garden to try their luck in a giant tombola and raffle and sample some homemade cakes.
The grand total raised was £645.22 – which, added to the collection from Mr Richards’ funeral, means the family have raised more than £1,000 for the charity since he died.
Mr Richards, a retired train driver, was 78 when he died last November from heart disease. He and Mrs Richards had been married for 58 years.
She said: "It was fantastic. I never expected to raise so much - £400 was my outside estimate.
"Thanks to everyone who supported us – and special thanks to the team who helped me.
"Help for Heroes work miracles and I’m so glad that I’ve done this in Reg’s memory. I know he’d be proud of us."
