Mr Stabbs, believed to have been in his early 60s, is thought to have been unloading building materials from a lorry at a property on the A260 Canterbury Road, just outside Densole, when the tragedy happened.

Police, ambulance and the air ambulance attended after being called at 10.10am.

An ambulance spokesman said: “A man had been injured by a heavy load coming off a lorry, which crushed him.

“We sent three ambulance cars and one ambulance to the scene, along with an air ambulance.

“The man was very seriously injured and had to be resuscitated at the scene. He was taken by road ambulance to the William Harvey Hospital in a life-threatening condition.”

Police confirmed that Mr Stabbs died shortly afterwards in hospital. An investigation into the tragedy is being carried out by the Health and Safety Executive.
