A shop in Ashford has laid a new ‘vinyl’ floor, turning the heads of shoppers in the town centre.

The Record Store, in Park Mall, which opened in its bigger premises in March this year, has placed a feature floor, made up of records, in the shop window.

The eye-catching display has been installed by the father-daughter duo Vincent and Tahlula Monticelli, who run the shop.

Tahlula had previously quipped that the pair set up the store after her mum told Vincent to do something with his record collection because it was taking up most of the house.

Mr Monticelli said: “The floor been an idea I’ve had for ages. The records were stuff we had from excess collections.”

The floor cost about £300 to lay and is made up of famous and distinguishable record labels such as Decca, Polydor, Phillips and RCA.

It is designed to enhance the original window display, which features an old record player, vinyl records by The Who and an attractive Lambretta motorbike signed by The Who.

There is also a sofa in the shop for people to go in and have a chat about music with the staff.

Mr Monticelli hopes the new display will be a talking point in the shopping centre. He said: “The thing that this area’s missing is people coming to it.

“It’s a great shopping area and small independents are opening up.

“It would be great to have lots more of that.”

The pair are hoping to cover more of the floor, as well as the stands which hold the records for sale.

The Record Store also supports musicians from the area and the pair have been hosting live gigs in their Park Mall store.
