Kent Police traffic officers called to Pluckley near Ashford after Wallaby spotted in road

10:00, 01 October 2013

Police were called to Pluckley after a wallaby was spotted in the road this morning.

The roads policing unit was called to the village - famous for being the most haunted place in the UK - after a member of the public saw the marsupial in Pluckley Road.

Officers arrived on the scene at about 6.30am, but could find no trace of the wallaby.

It is not the first time one of the mammals, which are native to Australia, has been spotted on the loose in the area.

In May last year, village resident Alex Pooley and her golden retriever Shackleton came across a wallaby as they walked through a field in Pluckley.

"We were in a field near the train station and I saw what I thought was a giant hare, but then it moved and started hopping," the teacher said.

"I was a bit surprised to say the least and the dog was off the lead and he went off to investigate.

"They ran around for a couple of minutes and then he came back and I put him on the lead.

"Then I saw it hopping down the path towards us. It seemed pretty friendly and quite intrigued because it came right up to us."

The video she filmed on her mobile phone became a YouTube hit, gaining nearly 50,000 views.

A wallaby was also photographed by a family on a ghost hunting trip to the village in 2009.

It has been speculated that it might be Wesley the wallaby who escaped from Badgers Hill Farm in Chilham in 2000.
