A well-used underpass beneath the M20 is to shut for three months to allow for more essential repairs.

National Highways closed the motorway between Junctions 9 and 10a in Ashford earlier this year as contractors started work on the Great Stour Bridge.

While the M20 itself will remain open during the next stage of works, the footpath under the carriageway will be closed.

The route - which links Ashford Rugby Club in Kennington with the Heathfield Road estate - will be shut from Tuesday, August 29 for up to three months.

In a statement, National Highways said: "We’ll soon be returning to finish our essential repairs and maintenance of the Great Stour Bridge.

"We’ll be carrying out this work from underneath the bridge and, for everyone’s safety, the foot and cycle path will be temporarily closed from Tuesday, August 29 for up to three months.

"An alternative route is available via Heathfield Road, Canterbury Road and Kinney’s Lane.

"We estimate this will add approximately seven minutes to your journey time, if travelling by foot."
