BRITISH long jump record holder Chris Tomlinson has been named in the Great Britain and Northern Ireland Under-23 team for the international against France and Guests at Ashford's Julie Rose Stadium this Saturday.
The 21-year-old, who jumped 8.27m last year to end Lynn Davies’ 23-year-old reign as UK record holder, will be hoping to impress the British selectors ahead of the World Champion-ships being held in Paris next month.
Tomlinson has experienced a disappointing summer so far and has only managed to jump 7.75m.
Ricky Soos, who pulled off one of the shock results at the Norwich Union World Trials and AAA Championships in Birmingham at the weekend when he won the 800m, will go into the meeting full of confidence after being named in the first wave of selections on Tuesday for Paris.
Many of Britain’s talented under-23 athletes that competed at the European Champion-ships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, earlier this month will be in action.
Ashford’s Lisa Dobriskey, the youngest member of that team and 1,500m bronze medallist, runs the 800m on her home track.
New European 200m champion Chris Lambert will be out to show why he is regarded as Britain’s most promising young sprinter.
Chris Thompson, gold medallist over 5,000m, tackles the shorter distance of 3,000m, while Tyrone Edgar, part of Britain’s winning sprint relay team, goes in the individual 100m.
Jennifer Meadows, who has been named in the 4x400m relay squad for Paris, competes in the individual race over one lap.
Meadows and Daniella Halsall, who fills the other 400m berth, were part of the silver medal-winning quartet that broke the British under-23 record in Poland.
