Ashford United have appointed Danny Kedwell as their new manager.

Kedwell, 40, takes up the position a day after it was announced he would be leaving his role as Chatham assistant boss.

“Ashford United is a great club, with excellent facilities, people and fans. I can’t wait to get started,” said the former Gillingham striker.

“It’s going to be a busy few months planning, getting players in and talking to our current players.

“But we will be ready and on the front foot, come the first kick of the new season.”

There was big interest in the vacant manager’s job, with Isthmian South East Ashford in the midst of a takeover.

Interim boss Alan Walker, working on behalf of the prospective owners, led the search for Kevin Watson’s successor.

There was even interest from a former Premier League player.

Outgoing owner Don Crosbie said: “Danny’s CV speaks for itself and having known Danny’s style and determination there are two things that stand out – great football and a desire at all times to win.

“Two excellent traits if our ambitions are to be achieved.

“The club’s new owners are fully behind the appointment and are really looking forward to the new season ahead and can’t wait to be fully involved in the push for success here at this great club.”

Kedwell had a spell as Cray Wanderers boss before joining Chats as player-assistant under Kevin Hake.

He helped the Chats achieve back-to-back promotions and they almost made it three this season, beaten by Enfield in the Isthmian Premier play-off final.

As well as hometown club Gillingham, he’s also played for the likes of AFC Wimbledon and Ebbsfleet.
