Scott Porter says Hythe Town’s 3-2 win at fog-shrouded Chipstead on Tuesday was his most bizarre night in football management.
He admitted he missed two of the goals in the gloom, which descended around the High Road ground, deep in the Surrey countryside, early in the second half but was happy to finish on the winning side.
The Hythe boss said: “I didn’t see the last 35 minutes, their bench were shouting and complaining about the conditions but we just carried on.
“The referee called his two assistants together at one stage but they could see across the other other side of the pitch. It was just the spectators and the two benches who couldn’t. It was bizarre and I hadn’t never experienced anything like that before.”
Penalty specialist and skipper Dave Cook and Shaun Welford both missed penalties – one in each half – as Hythe came from a goal down to claim the points.
Welford made amends scoring twice, taking his tally to 10 in as many games with Cook getting the other.
Porter added: “We needed to get back to winning ways. We lost Ashley Miller, and I changed the formation, going with 4-2-3-1 which suits us.
“We worked hard and got back to how we should be and all the players did well in the positions I asked them to play."
