It was a one-two finish for sisters Christine Costiff and Gill O’Connor at the end of the A&D RRC Lockdown League.

The Ashford club organised the league for runners across Kent and beyond during the lockdown to compete remotely and it’s proved hugely popular.

Runners have been challenged over different distances over the last nine weeks, short and long, and the final race was over one mile.

Ashford & District’s Costiff has been challenged hard of late and had to settle for a third place finish in the final challenge, with Invicta East Kent’s Sarah Gruber winning ahead of second placed Margaret Connolly (South Kent Harriers).

Different running clubs were well represented in the final week with Liz Weeks (Ashford Legends & Rejects) fourth overall and with an eighth consecutive age group win takes the ladies 35-44 title.

She was ahead of Medway & Maidstone’s Taryne McPherson (35-44 overall runner-up), Karen Seymour (Sittingbourne Striders), Marie Watson (South Kent Harriers) - third placed overall - and Jo Daniels (Dover Road Runners).

Folkestone RC’s Nikki Goodwin ran a 5:55 to take third in the 35-44 results and third overall in the age group.

Linda-Jean Deport (A&D) finished as ladies 45-54 lead runner. Watson was second while Tracy Calnan (A&D) put in a strong run to move into third place.

Rhian Shrimplin (A&D RRC) finishes in first place for the ladies under-35s, 16 points ahead of nearest rival Bianca Schobel (Equipe BAP). Alice Cook (A&D) takes third. It was Antel Muller who beat them all over a mile, however, with a time of 6:01.

Richard Tomlinson had already claimed the men’s crown and his second place finish over the mile left him 34 points clear of club-mate Alun Rodgers in the overall standings.

But it was a third Medway & Maidstone runner who took the final win, with Justin Lane (4:55) taking first place on adjusted time.

Folkestone RC’s Derek Matcham, Ashford & District’s Dan Green, Dover Road Runners’ Mark Sluman, South Kent Harriers’ Tom Millard, Virtually Last’s Steve Button, M&M’s Bob Fursey and Premature Acceleration’s Trevor Kay were all in the top 10 for the final challenge.

David Tyler (Folkestone RC) finished 12th in the last league challenge but third in the final standings behind the M&M pair and the lead runner for the men’s under-40s.

Laurence Teeling (A&D) was second under-40 runners overall ahead of Marshall Smith (Ashford AC) in third.

Matcham takes the men’s 40-49 win ahead of Green and Adam Groombridge (Dover RR).

Overall winner Tomlinson also takes the men’s 50-59 title with A&D’s Julius Samson second, Rodgers third and Gerard O’Sullivan (Ashford AC) fourth.

Over-60s runner Ray Pearce (SKH) made it nine out of nine with Sluman taking his ninth runner-up spot to take second place overall. Steve Partridge (Dover RR) gets the final podium place.

Ashford & District clinched the ladies title after winning nine races from nine but it was a closer battle for the men, with Medway & Maidstone just one point clear of Folkestone RC at the top.

It may be the end for the league but runners are taking part in a one-off 10 mile race this week.
