Confidence is rising at Kennington following back-to-back wins in Southern Counties East.

Ton have moved off the foot of the Premier Division table and up to 18th place after morale-boosting victories.

Dan Scorer’s side backed up their 2-0 midweek success over Holmesdale by coming from a goal down to triumph 2-1 at fellow battlers Sutton Athletic on Saturday.

Leading scorer Ryan Philpott levelled from the penalty spot and Harry Linch grabbed the second-half winner.

Kennington have been improving steadily over recent weeks and look well-equipped to push on in their survival bid.

The comeback win at Sutton, after trailing to a dubious penalty, highlighted that, with Ton players taking on board the management’s pre-match message.

“Mentally, we’ve come a long way,” said boss Scorer.

“We’ve been behind in games in the last eight weeks and done more than enough to come back and win.

“We reiterated that to the boys so if it does happen again and we fall behind that we’ve got more than enough to get ourselves back into games which is exactly what we did against Sutton.

“The boys rolled their sleeves up and we got another good win.

“It was a very important win with the position of Sutton in the league as well so that, after a really good win on Tuesday night against Holmesdale, it’s put us in a much better position.

“We always said this run of games would come where we’re beginning to see the rewards for all our efforts and our hard work.

“Two losses in the last seven games I think speaks volumes for how far we’ve come and that’s four wins in that time as well.

“It’s something we haven’t had the luxury of over the course of the season but we’re certainly in a much stronger position now.”

Kennington bid to continue their progress at home to Lordswood this Saturday (3pm).

Scorer added: “We’ve got key players coming back from injury and we’ve made one or two key additions to the squad so we’re looking strong at the right time.

“We feel this month in particular is a massive one in terms of the teams we’re playing.

“There’s games where maybe the expectation won’t be for us to get much but we’re certainly not thinking that way now.

“We know what we’re capable of doing, we know the performances we’re capable of putting in, so we’re just going to continue to do that.

“There’ll be games between now and the end of the season where we surprise a few people.

“There’ll also be games where we come away thinking we probably deserve more from that.

“But that is football at this level.

“I’ve said it since day one, I said it when we were 10 games without a win, that I always had enough confidence in the squad for us to get out of trouble and we look like a side that have the confidence and the belief to be able to do that now.

“But just because we’ve had one or two wins on the bounce doesn’t mean we’ve cracked it.

“There’s still a long way to go and it’s so tight at the bottom.

“I think it was important we just caught up with sides around us and we’ve dragged two or three into it now.

“We’ll be hoping to continue the form we’re in and begin to climb the table.

“All in all it’s a really positive start to the year, which is nice after a difficult opening half to the season.”
