Wesley Shrubsole angling: Predators like perch and pike who will be feeding when summer species lay dormant

Now that we’re changing into autumn the fish we go for also change.
Yes, the summer species will and do feed at this time, but other species will come to the fore. The freshwater angler will seek out the predators like perch and pike who will be feeding when summer species lay dormant.
Strong tackle will be needed to land a pike like the one pictured above but please remember this species is very delicate. If you have never caught one, or are new to pike angling, ask a few pike anglers to show you the ropes. Poor unhooking has sadly caused the death of many a prime specimen.
The other picture shows why thousands of anglers sit and shiver on frozen beaches. This double figure cod was caught recently from a ‘secret’ venue but my best guess would be Chesil beach.
Well done to both anglers, proper fish indeed!
I was lucky enough to be fishing when these sort of fish did not get a mention due to the amount of 20lb plus fish caught from our shores. Sadly these days are long past and a fish like the one in the picture is now a very big shore cod indeed.
