A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a "much-loved family man" was shot in the back of the head.
Dean Edwards was found collapsed in Betts Park in Penge, on Sunday, 12 July.
The 43-year-old had been walking home from the pub after meeting friends for a drink when he was shot from behind.
A 25-year-old man was arrested yesterday on suspicion of his murder. He was taken to a London police station where he remains at this time.
Police and paramedics were called to the scene, near the park's Croydon Road exit, at about 2.20am on the day of the incident.
Dean was found collapsed in the road and despite the efforts of emergency services, he was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
An appeal was launched as officers returned to the scene , near the junction with Tremaine Road, to speak to anyone who might have seen or heard something significant.
Senior investigating officer DCI Kate Kieran, said: “This is a major development in our investigation and we will continue to work hard to make sure that those who are responsible for Dean’s death are brought to justice.
“The people that killed Dean had absolutely no regard whatsoever for his life or for the law.
“Dean’s death is a tragic reminder that carrying a gun has devastating consequences and I continue to plea to anyone with any information to come forward either by calling police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously.”
Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact homicide detectives via the incident room on 020 8721 4868, or via 101 quoting CAD 1402/12JUL or call independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
