Crook Log Leisure Centre, Bexleyheath, reopens after investigation confirms cause of chemical leak
12:17, 19 July 2023
A leisure centre forced to evacuate due to a chemical leak has confirmed the cause.
Crook Log in Brampton Road, Bexleyheath was closed to the public yesterday morning after a “suspected chemical leak”.
The London Fire Brigade was called to the scene at 10am and the centre was temporarily shut. The building reopened at around 12.30pm.
The leisure centre apologised for the closure and has since confirmed the cause of the leak.
A spokesman said: “Thank you for everyone’s understanding and cooperation from today’s building closure.
“We experienced a mechanical malfunction with a part of our plant room equipment which safely injects chlorine into our pools.
“Unfortunately the injector tube snapped which created a chemical leak, creating chlorine fumes. We were alerted to this via our chlorine alarm.
“After a full building evacuation had taken place we contacted the emergency services who isolated the issue and made the area safe for us to re-enter the building.
“The tube has since been repaired and we hope this incident does not reoccur.
“We apologise for any inconvenience caused however we assure you the staff and team dealt with this in the manner that they have been trained to.
“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding during this time.
“Well done to all the teams involved, a big thank you to London Fire Brigade for all their help!”
