Warren Feeney resigns as Welling United manager: linked with vacant job at Glentoran in Northern Ireland
20:29, 05 June 2023
Warren Feeney has quit as manager of Welling just two months before the start of the new season.
The 42-year-old joined the Wings in March 2022, helping the club avoid relegation from National League South.
After a bright start to the 2022/23 campaign, results quickly tailed away and the Wings did not make themselves safe from the drop until the final fortnight of the campaign.
Former Northern ireland international Fenney has been to the vacant Glentoran job according to the Belfast Telegraph, after their manager Rodney McAree left at the weekend to take over at Dungannon Swifts.
They report that Feeney has strong family ties to his potential new club. Feeney’s dad Warren Senior played for the club in the 1970s and his son George is part of the youth set-up.
Welling have said that Feeney will remain associated to the club in an “ambassadorial role” and will offer “his advice where necessary”.
Feeney said: “With a heavy heart, I have decided to step away from Welling. I have been offered a new challenge that I just couldn’t turn down.
“My stats stand for themselves regarding the ups and downs of coming in at a difficult time to save the club. I, with a heavy heart, would like to thank my players, my staff and all the fans.
“Special mention to the board and Mark Goldberg, Jerry Dolke and my great friend Andy. I want to give big mention to my friend for life, and what an honest soldier he was, in Jake Winchester who stood side by side with me through it all and for every emotion.
“And to my boss in the club who fully believed in me and was more than a boss to me. It was the most difficult decision I had to make when telling him about my decision. What a great man and I’m proud to call you a friend and more for life.
“Good luck in your next adventure. Up the Wings.”
Welling have said that the process to recruit a new first-team manager will begin immediately.
