Orpington's Emma Raducanu will take on American world No.7 Coco Gauff after a 6-3, 6-2 win over Tamara Korpatsch in the First Round of the Australian Open.
Raducanu had been a doubt for the first grand slam of the year after an ankle injury in Auckland earlier this month, but passed her first test with flying colours as she bids to become a challenger at the majors once again after 12 months of disappointment following her US Open triumph in 2021.
Germany's Korpatsch gave as good as she got against Raducanu early on, with both players struggling to hold their serve, before the British No.1 stepped up a gear closing the match out in 85 minutes.
The 20-year-old, now 77th in the rankings, failed to make it past the Second Round at all four grand slams last season and although 18-year-old Gauff will be favourite on Wednesday, Raducanu will prove some stopping if she can find her A-game.
"I'm really looking forward to this match," she said in her post-match press conference. "I'm very up for it. Coco has obviously done a lot of great things and she's playing well.
"I think we're both good, young players, we're both coming through, part of the next generation of tennis, really. I'm looking forward to the occasion."
